"Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will."- George Bernard Shaw
Welcome to the Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts
The Center focuses on five major areas of art and creativity. We encourage student involvement with the arts both as participants and audience, provide support for creative research projects, advocate for facilities on campus that support the various disciplines and allow interdisciplinary exploration, engage a lively array of visiting artists, artists in residence and commissioned work, and explore the nature of creativity through research, symposia, and conversations.
In encouraging students to make and participate in original creative work in the arts and other disciplines, as well as attending arts events on and off campus we not only provide for the student who wants to pursue a life in the arts, but also foster exploration of ways of knowing that complement other fields of study.
Project grants are available for faculty, students and staff to stimulate artistic production and discourse. Grants support cultural activities outside of the regular academic responsibility of individuals, departments or units and recognize the act of creating as an endeavor worthy of funding.
At the start of the 2008/2009 academic year, our first interdisciplinary exploration began. We offered programs and departments commissioning funds to help bring artists to campus for the public symposium, Evolution Revolution: Science Changing Life. Faculty, students and staff were also offered the opportunity to apply for project grants that were specifically aimed at this topic. All recipients will attend the two-day symposium and return during February ’09 to present the evolution of their work in response to the topics discussed in our Emory Evolving Arts: New Works Festival.
Creativity Conversations events, hosted by Rosemary Magee, have included Salman Rushdie and Natasha Trethaway with Dorothy Allison, Joshua Bell, Stephen Tepper and Katherine Mitchell, will continue this year with Hanif Kureshi, E.O. Wilson and Phillip Glass, to name a few.
We invite you to the myriad of artistic and creative events at Emory. Join us in celebrating and enjoying the arts. Explore our website for more details about our projects. Share with us your thoughts and ideas. See more art!
My best,
Leslie Taylor
